How Staykey handles guest stay extensions automatically — access code validity, guest link durability, and what (if anything) you need to do.
Stay extensions are one of the most common real-world scenarios that trip up host software. The guest messages Airbnb asking to stay an extra night, Airbnb approves it, the calendar updates — and then what? Staykey is designed so that in most cases the answer is nothing: the extension flows through automatically.
Here's how it works, plus the few edge cases where a quick check helps.
No new message to the guest is required. The link they already bookmarked continues to work.
When the stay's end date changes:
If the lock is offline when the extension is synced, Staykey queues the code update. When the lock comes back online, the updated schedule gets pushed automatically.
If you want to confirm, open the property's device page — the lock's last-seen timestamp tells you whether the update has been pushed yet.
The same flow runs in reverse. If the guest checks out a night early or Airbnb cancels a night:
If you'd rather the code keep working through the original check-out (e.g., the guest is out but left items behind), you can extend the code manually in the stay's settings.
The one case worth a quick manual check: if extending the stay creates a back-to-back with the next booking, Staykey flags it in your dashboard. A back-to-back alert means your cleaning window is now tight, and you may need to:
See managing back-to-back turnovers for the specific tools.
If the booking was created directly in Staykey (not imported from Airbnb/VRBO), you extend the stay manually:
All of the downstream updates (code window, cleaning schedule, guest link) happen the same way.
Most extensions are fully automatic, but it's worth a 30-second check on the first few to make sure your specific setup is working end-to-end:
After the first one or two, you'll trust the automation and stop checking.
