What hardware you need to run Staykey — leading with the Z-Wave stack we recommend by default, plus what's experimental.
Staykey's default hardware stack is Home Assistant + Z-Wave. That's what we build and test against, and it's what we guarantee for per-stay passcode automation. Matter/Thread and Wi-Fi locks work too — read the feature-support nuance below before buying.
Pick one. We lead with Z-Wave because that's where Staykey can guarantee full lock/unlock and per-stay passcode management.
Z-Wave (standard, guaranteed passcode management):
Matter / Thread (experimental, host feedback welcome):
Matter locks pair with HA and Staykey can lock/unlock them reliably. Passcode management on Matter is best-effort today — it may work depending on the lock and firmware, but we can't guarantee it the way we can for Z-Wave. If you try one, send us feedback.
Wi-Fi / Zigbee: Home Assistant can also lock/unlock Wi-Fi (e.g., Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure 2 Wi-Fi) and Zigbee locks, so the lock/unlock feature in Staykey works across those radios. Passcode management is not guaranteed outside Z-Wave — if that matters to you (and it usually does for STRs), pick a Z-Wave lock.
Important nuance on feature support: Home Assistant can lock and unlock locks over Z-Wave, Matter, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi — Staykey's lock/unlock feature works across all of them. Automatic per-stay passcode management is only guaranteed on Z-Wave locks. Non-Z-Wave locks may support passcode rotation depending on the vendor and firmware, but we treat it as best-effort and don't warranty it.
