Setting Up Nabu Casa

Using Staykey? You probably don't need Nabu Casa. The Staykey plugin connects your Home Assistant to Staykey directly — no public URL, no subscription required. Nabu Casa is only needed if you use the direct connection method or want remote access to Home Assistant for other purposes.

Nabu Casa provides Home Assistant Cloud, the easiest way to access your Home Assistant remotely. It's a paid service ($6.50/month) that directly supports Home Assistant development.

Step-by-step setup

1. Create a Nabu Casa account

1. Go to nabucasa.com and click Subscribe
2. Create an account with your email address
3. Complete the subscription ($6.50/month, 31-day free trial available)

2. Connect Home Assistant to Nabu Casa

1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings → Home Assistant Cloud
2. Click Sign in and enter your Nabu Casa credentials
3. Wait for the connection to establish (usually takes a few seconds)

3. Enable Remote Access

1. In the Home Assistant Cloud settings, find the Remote Control section
2. Toggle Remote Control to enabled
3. Your remote URL will appear — it looks like https://xxxxxxxxxx.ui.nabu.casa

4. Test your connection

1. On your phone, turn off WiFi (to ensure you're not on your local network)
2. Open the Nabu Casa URL in a browser
3. You should see your Home Assistant login page
4. Log in to verify everything works

Using your Nabu Casa URL with Staykey

Once remote access is enabled, use your Nabu Casa URL when connecting Home Assistant to Staykey:

• URL format: https://xxxxxxxxxx.ui.nabu.casa
• Don't include a port number — Nabu Casa handles this automatically
• Generate a Long-Lived Access Token in Home Assistant for Staykey to use

Troubleshooting

Remote access won't enable:

• Check your Home Assistant is connected to the internet
• Verify your Nabu Casa subscription is active
• Try signing out and back into Home Assistant Cloud

URL not working:

• Ensure Remote Control is toggled on in Home Assistant Cloud settings
• Wait a few minutes after enabling — it can take time to propagate
• Try accessing from a different network to rule out local caching

Connection drops intermittently:

• Check your home internet connection stability
• Ensure your Home Assistant host isn't going to sleep or losing power
